Offred is a part that could easily be overplayed but Fili approaches her character with perfect balance. Her voice moves effortlessly through Ruders’ jarring score with a clear tone and intention. Fili delivers an extraordinary performance of the tormented heroine. "Katherine Fili leads the company as Offred. She has also found the much-needed variations in the tone of the story and has teased out the appropriate energies accordingly." Elser has ensured this is not such a production and has coached significant acting performances out of her singers. In many opera productions, the acting can often take a back seat to the music. Her staging makes good use of the space and its levels. Elser did an exceptional job with complex material.
